Whitchurch League win cracking Senior inter-league final
The Whitchurch League won the Shropshire Senior inter-league championship for the first time in six years by winning a cracking 2013 final.
They just piped the Shropshire Premier League to the John Bowers Trophy by two shots on Saturday night on a lightening, sun-kissed green at Hadley USC.
Captained by Dale Booth and managed by league official Phil Scott (ably assisted by Ben Hinton!), the Whitchurch boys recovered from losing to Shropshire Ladies by four chalks in their round robin group at Sir John Bayley earlier in the day.
They reached the semi-finals by virtue of being the best runners-up in the three groups – and then took full advantage of their good fortune.
Wem, winners of the crown in 2010, were Whitchurch’s victims in the semis by 12 shots while the Premier League were beating Shropshire Ladies by 14 in a tussle which saw the eight games shared.
The final could have gone either way but Martin Lloyd beat homester Jamie King and Colin Smith limited the damage against another Hadley man in Dave Price early on.
Josh Bradburn’s 21-9 best card of the final put Mike Hinton’s Premier team in with a real shout but Steve Rogers – son of Burway star Wayne but now playing for Woore in the Whitchurch League – got the north Shropshire lads over the line by being the best of their five winners with a 21-12 success.
County President John Hughes presented the trophy to Dale Booth and Mid Shropshire League president Jeff Hutchinson presented the Malcolm Fletcher player of the final trophy to Martin Lloyd. The final stages were refereed by Mike Potter.

THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT
BY MALCOLM FLETCHER, JEFF HUTCHINSON AND TERRY SAMBROOK
£11.00
As histories on local sporting organisations go, this is a very superior production, evidence of the time, professionalism and, not least, money that has gone into this book marking the centenary of the Shropshire Crown Green Bowling Association. The aim was to produce a quality book, and the association has certainly done that. It even has that glossy quality book smell, if you can have such a thing.
Once the decision was taken to go ahead with the project, the challenge was to raise the £7,000 or so for design and printing, Leagues and clubs affiliated to the association were asked if they could each make a contribution of at least £20.12 - a symbolically significant figure in this centenary year - and the appeal met with a generous response.
The project team comprised former Shropshire Star journalist Malcolm Fletcher, who is now secretary of the Mid Shropshire League, and past association presidents Jeff Hutchinson and Terry Sambrook.
Copies for sale are available either direct from Malcolm on 01952 771134 or Terry on 01743 358776, and will be available at all major county bowling events for the rest of the year. It would have been easy to do the book as a simple chronology, and the result would have been worthy, if rather unimaginative. Instead, the story has been told in lively fashion, picking out highlights, interesting facts, and spotlighting key personalities and events. On the persnalities front, the towering figure is that of Dick Meyrick (1915-1998), who became known as "Mister Bowls" and the book poses the question of whether he was the greatest crown green bowler ever.
Packed with both black and white and colour photos, the book will be a feast for anybody interested in Shropshire bowling, and is a fitting memento and souvenir of 100 unbroken years of the association.
