Invitation to a key event to all clubs in Shropshire. PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mo Corley
Friday, 30 December 2011 14:47

The Shropshire Bowls Development Alliance, supported by the BDA, would like to invite you to their Club Night taking place on Monday 16th January at Sir John Bayley BC (TF1 1QX), commencing at 7.30. The Shropshire BDA is made up of willing volunteers from all 4 codes, Graham Macpherson from Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin County Sports Partnership and Paul Humphreys of the BDA.

The evening is a chance for you to hear about, and ask questions on, various aspects of the national and regional campaign to increase participation in the sport of bowls across all 4 codes including what funding your club can access via the BDA and other sources. The event will see presentations by the following organisations:

  • Bowls Development Alliance
  • Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin County Sports Partnership
  • Shropshire Bowls Development Alliance
  • Clubmark

After the presentations there will be time for an extensive question and answer session.

The purpose of the club night is to inform your club of the work of the Shropshire Bowls Development Alliance and explain the various different ways the group, supported by the BDA and the County Sports Partnership, can offer local clubs support and advice and explore the different ways with which we can all work closer together.

This is a key event for the clubs of Shropshire and I would strongly encourage each and every club to send 2 representatives along to the club night to find out more. Increasing participation in bowls is a challenge for every club of every code and it is very important that as many clubs as possible take up the opportunities that the Shropshire Bowls Development Alliance intend to provide.

Please inform us of your possible attendance, as refreshments will be provided.

Rate relief for Sporting Organisations PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mrs Mo Corley
Monday, 31 October 2011 14:07

Concerns have been voiced regarding a dramatic increase in rates for the next year, we have contacted Shropshire Council and this is their reply:

The Council has a legal duty to recover rates in accordance with the current assessment shown in the Local Rating List, which is maintained by the Valuation Office Agency of H.M. Revenues & Customs. These assessments will vary according to the type, size and location of the rateable property. It should also take into account the seasonal use of the premises, together with the facilities that are available.

If any ratepayer, whether they are a sporting organisation or not, has a concern with the actual ‘make-up’ of the rating assessment, they should contact the local office of the VOA. For Shropshire the relevant address is:

Valuation Office Agency,

Darwin House

2 The Mount

Shrewsbury

SY3 8PU

Or they can be contacted on telephone number 03000 507400. This is a direct line through to the Shrewsbury office.

Alternatively their website address is: www.voa.gov.uk

Once the liability has been calculated based upon the rating assessment, local councils have the power to award certain levels of rate relief for charitable, or ‘not for profit’, organisations. There are basically two types of this relief – mandatory and discretionary.

Mandatory relief is 80% of the rating liability, and is awarded to any organisation that is either:

i)                    Registered with the Charities Commission – it may be of use to have a look at their website: www.charity-commission.gov.uk or

ii)                   Registered with H.M. Revenues & Customs as a Community Amateur Sports Club. For more information their website address is: www.hmrc.gov.uk and search for CASC.

Councils can also award up to 100% discretionary rate relief, but as regards sporting organisations Shropshire Council has formulated and agreed a policy that awards the following:

i)                    75% relief where the organisation has achieved CLUBMARK accreditation through  Sport England – a useful website to look at is: www.clubmark.org.uk.

ii)                   20% top up relief where the organisation is both registered as a CASC and achieved CLUBMARK accreditation – a total of 100% relief with the mandatory 80%

iii)                 25% relief where the organisation is neither registered as a CASC or achieved CLUBMARK accreditation.

When an application is received from any sporting organisation both the CASC and CLUBMARK national registers are checked for the organisations inclusion.
